Lincs Skies, a celebration of the big skies of Lincolnshire and surrounding counties through displaying Lincolnshire photos, began on Twitter, @LincsSkies, on March 8th 2016.
As a keen, but not very good, amateur “smartphone photographer”, with some beautiful Lincolnshire photos of sunrises and sunset captured on camera, I needed somewhere online to share these photographs. I thought that it would be good for other like-minded Lincolnshire photographers to have somewhere to share images online, where they could be appreciated by others.
Lincolnshire and the Fens are well known for their “big skies” and some of the sunsets, sunrises and other sky conditions, are beautiful. I wanted to capture these amazing Lincolnshire photos and share them online in order that other people could appreciate their beauty as well.
The concept of a Lincolnshire Skies twitter page came to mind immediately after stopping to take this image of the wind turbines at Deeping St Nicholas on a smartphone. This was the very first image posted on the @LincsSkies Twitter feed.
@LincsSkies quickly became popular and within 2 months it had over 2000 followers, with local photographers posting wonderful Lincolnshire photos of landscapes and skies from across the county. It also developed a number of followers and contributors from neighbouring counties and also from Holland, a country with similarly flat landscapes and big skies. You can also find Lincolnshire photos of the Lincs Skies feeds on Facebook, Flickr and Instagram.
In 2016, due to popular demand, we ran a photo competition. Lincs Skies followers were invited to enter photographs taken in Lincolnshire and the most “liked” (in terms of social media “likes”) were entered into a final selection. From these finalists, 12 winning photos were chosen by a judging panel. These 12 photos made up the popular Lincs Skies Calendar. The calendar was sold online and in retail outlets across Lincolnshire for £9.
Due to the very generous sponsorship by Elsoms Seeds Ltd and other local businesses, we were able to donate the full £4747.00 takings to the very deserving Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance. We intend to repeat the calendar in 2017.
This website is dedicated to the beautiful landscapes and “big skies” of Lincolnshire and the surrounding Fenland counties, seen through the eyes of the professional and amateur photographers that live there.
