Lincs Skies, a catalogue of Lincs photos, originated as a Twitter feed on March 8th 2016 to celebrate the big skies of Lincolnshire. Within 2 months it had attracted over 2000 followers and after 7 months, well over 5000 followers. Many more Twitter users interact regularly with the Lincs photos and photographers on the page and followers come from all over the globe.
As a keen, but not very good, amateur “smartphone photographer”, with some beautiful Lincolnshire photos of sunrises and sunset captured on camera, I needed somewhere online to share these photographs. I thought that it would be good for other like-minded Lincolnshire photographers to have somewhere to share images online, where they could be appreciated by others.
Lincolnshire and the Fens are well known for their “big skies” and some of the sunsets, sunrises and other sky conditions, are beautiful. I wanted to capture these amazing Lincolnshire photos and share them online in order that other people could appreciate their beauty as well.
@LincsSkies quickly became popular and within 2 months it had over 2000 followers, with local photographers posting wonderful Lincolnshire photos of landscapes and skies from across the county. It also developed a number of followers and contributors from neighbouring counties and also from Holland, a country with similarly flat landscapes and big skies. You can also find Lincolnshire photos of the Lincs Skies feeds on Facebook, Flickr and Instagram.
There are two things that make @LincsSkies work so well:
The photos are taken by local amateur and professional photographers. They illustrate a range of weather conditions, cloud formations, seasons, landscapes, towns and villages across Lincolnshire, capturing moments of beauty and sharing them for all to see.
The Lincs Skies calendar, featuring winning entries from a competition on the @LincsSkies Twitter page, has attracted a lot of attention from local press and radio. The calendar is sold in aid of the Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance, raising a total of £4747 in 2017. Entries for the 2018 calendar competition are now being taken.
I’d like to say a BIG thank you to the wonderful community on @LincsSkies. It’s been a pleasure running the page.
